False Alarms PDF Print E-mail

falsealarmHow many false fire alarms are there each day in the United States? According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than six thousand, and the number is increasing.

"We can definitely do something about it locally, "says the city's fire chief, Don Kelley. "We're asking everyone to take it seriously, and let others know it's not ok to cause a false fire alarm."

The Lawrenceburg Fire Department has posted this 60-second video clip on its website to help inform the local community about this growing nationwide problem.

The chief adds, "Last year, we responded to 80 fire alarms that turned out to be false. Our fire crews have to treat all alarms as if they are real and respond as quickly and safely as possible.  False alarms risk the safety of our firefighters as well as the public. Although our firefighters use utmost safety at all times, accidents can still occur. Last year these false calls cost the taxpayers of Lawrenceburg approximately $80,000, money that should be spent for real emergencies."
